AIG Vision

Davie County Schools will provide all AIG students with engaging and challenging experiences to develop their potential, prepare them for college and careers, and maximize their future opportunities.

AIG Program Goals

In order to improve the educational performance of gifted students, Davie County Schools will work:

To identify students with high abilities and high academic achievement utilizing multiple criteria.
To differentiate and enrich the core curriculum to challenge the academically/intellectually gifted learner.
To provide an array of services in a variety of settings which meet the academic needs of highly able learners.

2023-2024 AIG Annual Surveys

The AIG Surveys for the 2023-2024 school year are open for completion. The information gathered from the surveys is used to continue to strengthen and improve the AIG program. The surveys will close on Monday, April 22nd. Students will complete surveys using the links provided for them at school.

AIG Advisory

In order to communicate information about AIG, promote parent involvement and advocacy, and to encourage parents to help gather and share information with others in the community, an AIG Advisory has been formed and meets twice during the school year. Advisory members include AIG Specialists, regular classroom teachers, school administrators, and parents of AIG students.

The AIG Advisory will meet in the fall and in the spring. If interested in serving on the Advisory, please contact the AIG Specialist assigned to your school.

AIG Local Endorsement Course

To improve teachers’ preparedness and credentials for AIG instruction, a 30-hour hybrid course is available to meet local AIG requirements. Teachers who are interested should contact Cherri White at whitec@davie.k12.nc.us.

Elementary School

Heather Dyson

William R. Davie and Cornatzer Elementary

Heather Dyson is the AIG Specialist at William R. Davie and Cornatzer Elementary Schools. She has taught in Davie County for almost 17 years. She earned her degree in Elementary Education from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Masters in Elementary Education from Winston Salem State University, and holds her Gifted Certification License. Heather is married to husband Justin Dyson and they share two sons, Harper and Camden. She looks forward to working with the students from William R. Davie and Cornatzer in helping them build on their strengths, grow in their weaknesses, and reach their full potential.

Kerri Wall

Cooleemee and Mocksville Elementary School

Kerri Wall is the AIG Specialist at Cooleemee Elementary School and Mocksville Elementary School. She earned a degree in Elementary Education from Appalachian State University and her National Board Certification. Prior to this, Mrs. Wall was an elementary classroom teacher. She enjoys working with students from different grades and challenging them to learn new things.

Julia Nuce

Shady Grove Elementary School and DCS Virtual

Julia Nuce is the AIG specialist at Shady Grove Elementary and Davie County VIrtual School. This is her 10th year in education and she has taught every grade level. Julia graduated from Wheeling University in 2017 after completing an accelerated teaching program for English and Special Education and earning her Master’s in Education Leadership. She then went on to graduate school at Gardner Webb University where she achieved an add on licensure in Education Leadership before moving on to her doctorate. Early on, Julia decided that the implementation of technology into classroom learning was a passion and she has served in other districts as an instructional technologist. During this time, Julia realized that she had a passion for the growth of elementary and middle school students and is very excited to be teaching gifted children. In her spare time, Julia likes to spend time with her husband, Joseph, and her children, Oryn, Rosalyn, and Ravyn!

Laura Martin

Pinebrook Elementary School

Laura Martin is the AIG specialist at Pinebrook Elementary and the liaison for DCS Virtual Academy. She attended the University of Florida where she earned a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Elementary Education as well as her AIG licensure before taking her first teaching job in North Carolina. She holds a Master’s degree in Instructional Technology and a reading certification from Appalachian State University. Mrs. Martin has been teaching for over 20 years, most of those years with gifted students in Davie County. She enjoys working with children and helping them become lifelong learners!

Middle School

Leslie Kovich

William Ellis Middle School School

Leslie Kovich teaches 6th Grade Advanced Math at William Ellis Middle School and is the AIG Lead, serves on the SIT team & Guided Coalition, and is a member of the Hospitality Committee.

She earned her Bachelor's from Westminster College (New Wilmington, PA), Education Certification at Medaille College (Buffalo, NY), and Master's in Leadership & Supervision from Northern Illinois University (DeKalb, IL).

Prior to teaching in North Carolina, Mrs. Kovich was a gifted specialist in New York, New Jersey, and Illinois. She has experience with several gifted education models such as: Renzulli, self-contained, replacement math, and push-in gifted services. She has served on numerous gifted identification teams and created a standards-based curriculum for grades K through Second Grade with an emphasis on creative and critical thinking skills.

Mrs. Kovich was the Director of Admissions and Marketing at an independent school for gifted children PS3 - Grade 8 (Palatine, IL) for six years, prior to moving to Davie County and joining Davie County Schools in 2015.

Tonya Kerr

North Davie Middle School

Tonya Kerr is the AIG Specialist at North Davie Middle School, where she has spent almost all of her 24 years of teaching. Mrs. Kerr is a graduate of Davie High School and Appalachian State University, completing her Masters in Reading there as well. At North Davie, Mrs. Kerr teaches advanced language arts classes in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. She is the yearbook adviser and the sponsor for the Junior Beta Club. Mrs. Kerr loves spending time with her family, especially since her son lives at the beach and her daughter lives in the mountains! She also enjoys reading and listening to Eric Church. Her favorite part of being a teacher is following the successes of her students, in the classroom and beyond.
